What Is TeleMental Health Counseling?

Since COVID, telehealth has become increasingly popular as a way to access medical care. Telemental health counseling is mental health therapy delivered via video with audio using a HIPAA compliant database. It protects your health information and allows you to attend therapy from the comfort of your own home, during your lunch break, or anywhere you are located within NC.

All you need to attend therapy is an electronic device with video and audio capabilities – e.g. a cell phone, laptop, iPad, or desktop.

Telemental Health Therapy Is NOT Recommended For:

  • People who have just been hospitalized, are in crisis, have numerous past hospitalizations, or are actively contemplating death by suicide
  • Anyone experiencing hallucinations of any kind, delusions, extreme paranoia, schizophrenia, or any other psychotic symptoms
  • Those who are court-ordered to attend therapy

Benefits of Online Mental Health Counseling

Online mental health counseling offers a wide range of benefits that traditional in-person therapy may not provide. These include:

  • Accessibility: Telemental health counseling eliminates physical barriers and/or issues with transportation and childcare, allowing individuals to access mental health care from the comfort of their own home. In fact, these sessions can be attended from any location in NC with a stable Internet connection. This is especially beneficial for those who live in rural areas or have limited mobility.
  • Convenience: With telemental health, individuals can schedule therapy sessions at times that are most convenient for them, without having to worry about commuting or taking time off work. This makes it easier to prioritize mental health and integrate therapy into a busy schedule.
  • Affordability: Telemental health counseling may be more cost-effective than traditional in-person therapy as there are no additional costs associated with transportation or childcare.
  • Comfort: For some individuals, the comfort and privacy of their own home may make it easier to open up and discuss sensitive topics during therapy sessions. This can lead to a more effective therapeutic experience and better outcomes.
  • Continuity of care: Telemental health counseling allows individuals to continue receiving therapy even when they are unable to attend in-person sessions – for example, during times of travel (within NC) or illness. This promotes consistency and continuity of care, which are important for mental health treatment.
