Online PTSD Therapy

Are you experiencing symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, or avoidance behaviors due to a past traumatic experience? PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) can significantly impact one’s daily life and relationships. But there is hope for healing and managing the effects of trauma through online PTSD therapy.

In our online PTSD counseling sessions, we will work together to address the underlying causes of your PTSD and develop a customized plan. It is my goal to provide a safe and supportive space for you to process your trauma and learn effective coping strategies to improve your overall well-being.

What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD is often found in, but not limited to, people who have experienced any of the following:

  • Childhood trauma
  • Sexual abuse or assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Combat
  • Natural disasters
  • Accidents

Symptoms may include:

  • Flashbacks
  • Intrusive thoughts related to the trauma
  • Avoidance of environmental factors that serve as reminders of the trauma
  • Severe anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Emotional numbing
  • Dissociation (feeling disconnected from yourself)
  • Nightmares
  • Changes in mood and behavior
  • Suicidal tendencies

These symptoms can significantly impact one’s daily life and relationships if left untreated.

If you have been contemplating death by suicide, it is crucial that you seek immediate help: Please call 911 or proceed to the nearest hospital. The suicide hotline is also a great resource and is available 24/7: Simply call or text 988. Additionally, based on the severity of your symptoms, it may be advised to seek therapy in person.

Regardless of the PTSD symptoms you are experiencing, reaching out for help is a vital step towards healing and safety. Your life matters, and there is hope available.

Acute vs. Chronic PTSD

There are two main types of PTSD: acute and chronic.

Acute PTSD typically arises very soon after a traumatic event and may last for a shorter duration (often up to four weeks). Symptoms are usually intense but can diminish over time. Individuals with acute PTSD may experience flashbacks, heightened anxiety, and emotional distress but often find relief as they process their trauma with appropriate support.

In contrast, chronic PTSD refers to symptoms that are ongoing and can continue for years if left untreated. Individuals may find their daily life severely impacted, experiencing persistent feelings of fear, anxiety, and hopelessness. Chronic PTSD often requires a more structured therapeutic approach, as coping strategies need to address long-term manifestations of trauma.

I will tailor the therapy I provide to suit your specific situation and develop a plan that offers the most effective means of healing and recovery.

Benefits of Receiving PTSD Therapy Online

PTSD can make daily life challenging, and seeking therapy may feel overwhelming. However, online therapy offers a safe, convenient, and effective way to address these concerns.

Some benefits of receiving PTSD therapy online include:

  • Flexibility: Virtual sessions allow for more flexibility in scheduling appointments.
  • Comfort: Being able to attend therapy from the comfort of one’s own home can reduce some of the anxiety associated with traditional in-person therapy.
  • Accessible: Online PTSD counseling is accessible for those who live in remote or rural areas where mental health resources may be limited.
  • Confidentiality: Online therapy provides confidentiality without having to go into a physical office setting.

Treating PTSD through Online Therapy

Online therapy offers a safe and effective means for addressing and managing symptoms of PTSD. I will work with you to develop coping mechanisms, reduce anxiety, and improve your overall well-being.

Some approaches I may use in providing PTDS treatment online include:

  • Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) – This approach focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns related to the traumatic event through various techniques such as cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques, and exposure therapy. Through our virtual sessions, we can work together to process and reframe traumatic memories in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) – Another form of CBT, CPT focuses on processing and challenging the thoughts and beliefs individuals may have about themselves or the world as a result of their trauma. This approach can help restructure negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
  • Mindfulness-based therapy – By incorporating mindfulness techniques, we can work towards managing difficult emotions and building resilience. Mindful breathing exercises, body scans, and other techniques can also help individuals cope with triggers related to their trauma.
  • Improving coping skills – Together, we can identify and practice healthy coping mechanisms to best manage your symptoms and improve your overall well-being. These may include relaxation techniques, grounding exercises, or self-care practices.

Depending on your specific needs, I may incorporate a variety of therapeutic approaches to best address and treat your PTSD.

*Note: If your symptoms are severe (e.g. if you are having suicidal ideation), it may be better to receive in-person therapy.
